Sounds good, but what about external factors affecting our life suddenly and unpredictably?

A good question, not one with an easy answer. :-)

Still, I've always believed that it is the dignity and grace with which we handle the unexpected curves that takes us forward. The things that I remember most clearly about every unpleasant surprise (or worse) thrown our way is how the people I cared about dealt with it.

And so too I think the way I dealt with it, badly or otherwise, probably had the most lasting impact on me.

But you're right. A lot of what happens happens to us, not because of us. :-)
