Faith in the shadow of Wal-Mart

Here is an interesting story about a Jesuit community in Guelph, Ontario that fought the arrival of a new Wal-Mart next door -- and lost.

Sometimes when you go out to "fight the good fight," you lose. And then, slowly, you win again.

Hmm, maybe sometimes you shouldn't go all the way and fight something off completely (depends on what it is you're fighting, of course).Maybe it's better to accept the arrival of Wal-mart, because it does bring some benefits, but also put pressure on it to change some of the policies you disagree with.

Good insight. That was indeed the end result. Walmart grew a number of pretty vines and hedges between the two properties, to allow the retreat centre to remain pastoral and quiet.
